Driver Down After Car Plows Into Paris Police Van

People are being told to avoid a popular Paris tourist hub after a man drove a car into a police van in the Champs-Elysees shopping district this morning.  Paris police say they have the driver is under arrest. The French national police service said the man drove into the van in front of a police station in the popular shopping district. The car burst into flames after hitting the van.

French news agency AFP quotes police as saying the driver was "on the ground ... unconscious." No law enforcement or civilians were hurt. Police didn't say whether the crash was accidental or deliberate.

In April, an attacker shot and killed a Paris police officer on the Champs-Elysees only days before France's presidential election.  The attacker said he was a defender of ISIS. A state of emergency is in effect across France after several deadly Islamic extremist attacks..
